THE CONDEMNATION OF JEALOUSY

THE CONDEMNATION OF JEALOUSY

In The Holy Qur'an Allah Ta'ala says,

"And covet not that where by Allah has made one of you excel over the other. For men there is share from their earning, and from women there is share from their earning. And ask Allah for His Grace. Undoubtedly, Allah knows everything." (Surah Nisa, verse 32)

In another place Allah Ta'ala says,
"(O beloved Say I take refuge) From the evil of the envier when he envies me." (Surah Falaq, verse5)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! Allah Ta'ala is telling His beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam to take refuge. Why is he telling him to take refuge and what is he telling him to seek refuge from? It states that seek my safety from the envious, jealous ones when they approach you. My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! A jealous person tries to cause as much damage as possible because of his jealousy and leaves no stone unturned in his mission. He uses all his strengths and everything in his power to disrupt and destroy. That is why we are told to seek refuge from Allah Ta'ala, because nothing can breach His security.

Let us look at what jealousy is. We should understand it properly so that we can save ourselves from this large sin.

Anger turns to hatred and hatred turns to jealousy. Jealousy is only on the Blessings and Graces bestowed by Allah Ta'ala. When Allah Ta'ala grants something to any of His bondmen, one of two conditions overcomes his brothers (in faith). One of these conditions is that he does not like it and wants blessing to disappear. This is called jealousy.

Jealousy is not liking a blessing and wanting it to disappear. The second condition is not wanting it to disappear or not wishing ill for his brother, but wanting this same thing for himself. This is knows as envy (Rashk). To envy is allowed whereas jealousy is strictly forbidden (Haraam). May Allah Ta'ala save us all from jealousy and make us happy on our situations and wish the best for everyone. Aameen.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah radiallaho ta'ala anhu narrates that Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam said, "Save yourselves from jealousy, because jealousy destroys good deeds just like fire destroys sticks." (Abu Daud)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! We are all aware of how difficult it is to do good deeds in this age of trials and tribulations. People do not have the time to do good deeds in this dreadful atmosphere. Even if a person wants to do good deeds in this sea if evil, he finds it very difficult to do so. If he does manage to do some good deeds, saving the good deed is extremely tough. Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam has bestowed on us a great favour by telling us what causes our good deeds to be destroyed; "jealousy destroys good deeds just like fire destroys sticks."

You can understand from the above example that just as a fire leaves no trace of the stick once it gets hold of it, the same thing applies to good deeds if they are caught by the flame of jealousy. Therefore to save your good deeds, save yourself from jealousy, which is a great evil. May Allah Ta'ala save us from all bad deeds. Aameen.

Hazrat Anas radiallaho ta'ala anhu narrates that Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam said, "Do not have hatred or jealousy for each other. Do not have enmity for each other and do not break relations with each other. And O slave of Allah Ta'ala, become brothers to each other and it is not permissible for a Muslim to cut off relations with another Muslim for more than three days." (Bukhari and Muslim)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! We are going closer to those things that Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam has ordered us to stay away from. We have been forbidden to hate, to have jealousy, to make enemies and from breaking off relations. However these things are rampant in our societies. Muslims have become so greedy for personal gain that they do not even care if something is forbidden. If we become obedient to the teachings of Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam, the beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam would look at us with kindness and generosity. The Mercy to the world's sallalaho alaihe wasallam has ordered Muslims to treat each other as brothers and not to break off ties for more than three days.

He is making us aware that if we are his true followers then we should love him and resolve all our problems and disputes within three days. May Allah Ta'ala look at all of us with grace and kindness. May he guide us to follow the teachings of Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam. Aameen.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah radiallaho ta'ala anhu narrates that Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam said, "Everyone's deeds are presented twice a week, on Monday's and Thursday's. The sins of all are forgiven except the person who has hatred or jealousy for his Muslim brother. The Angels are told to leave them (not to wipe clean their sins) until such a time that he refrains from doing this."

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! Our deeds are presented on Monday's and Thursday's. Look at the Mercies of the Merciful One that He forgives everyone except those two that have hatred or jealousy in their hearts for each other. These two are not forgiven. What can be less fortunate for these two than the fact that the Merciful wants to forgive but they are not in a position to be forgiven?

We see from this that hatred and jealousy is such an evil that Allah Ta'ala strictly dislikes it and is so unhappy at those that are suffering from it that He tells the Angels to leave such people in the state that they are in until they do not reform.

May Allah Ta'ala save you, me, and all Muslims from this disease and illness. Aameen.

Hatred and Jealousy the Disease of Previous Nations

Hazrat Zubair radiallaho ta'ala anhu states that Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam said, "The diseases and illnesses of the previous nations (ummats) have infected you as well. This illness is hatred and jealousy, which will make you bald. I do not mean bald as in having no hair, I mean it will shave (destroy) your faith." (Tirmizi, Imam Ahmed)

Allah O Akbar! My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! The previous nations changed the whole face of their religion. They called Hazrat Isa alaihis salaam the son of Allah Ta'ala. They changed the contents of the revealed books as they pleased. The extent of their hatred and jealousy was so deep rooted, that they denied and refused to believe the verses that gave the good news about the arrival of Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam that were present in their books. The Christians and Jews refuse to believe on the exalted status of Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam on the basis of their hatred and jealousy and with this they destroyed their faith.

The Crown of the Universe sallalaho alaihe wasallam has told us how to save ourselves from destroying our faith, and also showed us how to safeguard it.

May Allah Ta'ala show kindness to us all and give us the guidance to safeguard our faith. Aameen.

Jealous Person Is An Enemy of Allah Ta'ala's Blessings

Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Abbas radiallaho ta'ala anhuma narrates that Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam said, "Undoubtedly there are those that are the enemies of Allah Ta'ala's blessings." The companions asked, "Who are they?" Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam replied, "Those people that burn inside (are jealous) because of the blessings that Allah Ta'ala has granted to another person." (Tibrani)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! The disease of burning is rampant today. If someone else has wealth or respect, their relatives and friends burn and pray for this blessing to be destroyed. If only we would a bit of intelligence we would never be jealous of blessings received by anyone else. The One who can grant wealth, happiness and respect to whomever He pleases grants those blessings, and people get jealous and think they can stop that?

This ignorant person does not realise that nothing will happen based on what he wants, but only the Will of Allah Ta'ala will prevail. Therefore always remain happy with the decision of Allah Ta'ala and ask him for Bounties and for a clean heart. He is the Beneficent One and does not turn beggars away empty handed but fills their needs with the sadqa of Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam and grants them blessings as well.

May Allah Ta'ala shower his Blessings on all believers. Aameen.

One Who Is Pleased At A Muslim's Difficulties

Hazrat Waasila bin Asqa radiallaho ta'ala anhu narrates that Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam said, "Do not be pleased at the difficulties of your brother, Allah Ta'ala will free him and will afflict you with that difficulty." (Tirmizi)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! It is not befitting a Muslim that he should be happy at another Muslim's difficulties, even if he causes us thousands of problems. The reason for this is that the true pain of those difficulties is only felt by the one who is inflicted with it. A complete believer is one who wishes for his Muslim brother what he likes for himself. Remember, if you see a Muslim in difficulties and pray for his freedom from those difficulties, Allah Ta'ala is the Merciful One, He will free the person from troubles and will stop difficulties from your path.

Someone has said so elegantly and beautifully, "Do good and you will receive good." If we see someone in trouble and are happy then it is possible that Allah Ta'ala will free him from that difficulty and will inflict us with that pain and trouble. Therefore if we want to save ourselves from troubles, never be happy at the difficulties of others. May Allah Ta'ala grant all Muslims respect, happiness and pure hearts. Aameen.

Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam Feared Jealousy In His Ummah

Hazrat Abu Ammar Asharaani radiallaho ta'ala anhu narrates that Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam said, "The biggest fear that I have for my ummah is that because of abundance of wealth, there will be jealousy and they will start to kill each other." (Ahya Ul Uloom)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam has stated that the reason for jealousy will be abundance of wealth, and the result of this jealousy will be bloodshed amongst each other. This is what is happening today. Do we not see the thing that Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam feared present in our societies today? Of course we do. We see that because of a few pounds or dollars, or because of success, or increased business, all efforts are made to destroy him and this bloodshed is getting worse day by day. If Muslims would save themselves from this disease of jealousy, I believe many issues would be resolved in society. There would be love and understanding amongst people. Let us pray that Allah Ta'ala saves us all from jealousy and guides us to be happy when we see others happy. Aameen.

Glad Tidings of Paradise Given In The World

Hazrat Anas radiallaho ta'ala anhu narrates that we were present in the court of Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam, and he said, "There will be a dweller of Paradise (Jannati) that comes here right away. At that moment an Ansari companion arrived. He had shoes in his left hand and the water from ablution was dripping from his beard. He greeted all of us. The next day Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam said the same thing and this same companion arrived. The same thing happened on the third day. When Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam had left, Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas radiallaho ta'ala anhu followed the Ansari companion and said to him, "I have had a disagreement with my parents and have promised not to go to them for three days. Can I spend these three days with you?"

The narrators report that he spent 3 nights at the Ansari companion's house. He saw that he did not get up to worship in the night but that when he would turn over in his sleep he would take the name of Allah Ta'ala. He stayed on his bed until it was time for morning prayer. He did not hear anything but goodness from his mouth in the time that he spent with him. When he had spent three days with him and realised that his deeds were minor he said to him, "O slave of Allah Ta'ala ! There was no fight between my parents and I nor was there any disagreement. I heard Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam say that you were a dweller of Paradise. I wanted to see what great deeds you did that you received the good news of Paradise on the earth. I did not see you doing any extra worship or deeds in these three days, so how did you attain this high status? He replied, "My deeds are just those that you have seen." When I started to leave he called me back and said, "I do not hold any resentment for any other Muslim in my heart, and therefore I have no jealousy for anyone for any blessings that Allah Ta'ala has given them." Hazrat Abdullah radiallaho ta'ala anhu said to him, "This is the quality that has enabled you to reach such a raised position and this is beyond us." (Narrated by Ahmed)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! Who does not want Paradise, respect, and a raised status? All you need to do is clean your heart of any malice or ill feeling for another Muslim, and if you see someone happy or successful, pray for their increased happiness and increased wealth. The result of wishing good on a fellow Muslim will lead to Allah Ta'ala to looking at us with Grace and Mercy and He will make us deserving of Paradise as well, and grant us respect in both worlds. May Allah Ta'ala cleanse our hearts of malice, hatred, jealousy, and guide us to always wish for the best for everyone. Aameen.

In The Shade of the Heavens

It is narrated that when Hazrat Musa Kalim Ullah alaihis salaam climbed Mount Toor to communicate with Allah Ta'ala, he saw a person in the shade of the heavens. He was envious of the status of this person and asked Allah Ta'ala, "Can I know the name of this person?" A reply came, "Let Me tell you about his actions, he was never jealous of anyone, he never disobeyed his parents, and he did not back-bite or tell tales." (Ahya Ul Uloom, Vol 3)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! Hazrat Musa alaihis salaam, a great Prophet of Allah Ta'ala was envious of this person and his status. Allah O Akbar! May we be sacrificed on the fortune of this person that he was in the shade of the heavens. May Allah Ta'ala grant us the same habits that he had, and save us from jealousy, make us obedient to our parents and save us from back-biting. Aameen.

The Calamity of Jealousy

Imam Ghazali alaihir rahmah writes in his famous book, "Ahya Ul Uloom" that Bakr bin Abdullah rehmatullahe ta'ala alaihe states that a person goes to the court of a King and keeps repeating the words, "Repay the favour of a benefactor by treating him well in return. The one that treats you badly, his evil is enough for him." One person was jealous of this man that was standing in the court of the King and he said to the King, "This person that is standing here and saying this, he has hatred for you in his heart and says that the King has bad breath."

The King asks the person what proof he has of this and the man replies that when he stands up to say those words he is covering his nose so that your bad breath does not worry him. The King said that, "I will test him and if it is as you say I will punish him severely."

The backbiter then fed the person food that contained a lot of garlic. Soon the King called him and when he approached the King he covered his mouth so that the smell of garlic would not unduly trouble the King. Upon seeing this the King believed what the backbiter had told him. He gave a letter to this person to give to the King's agent with the message that as soon as the agent received the letter he should kill the person that had brought the letter, and stuff his body with straw and send it back to him. The person took the letter and set off.

Along the way he met the backbiter. He asked what the King had given him. The person replied that he had a letter for the King's agent and he would get a reward when he delivered it. The backbiter thought that he would get the reward instead and said, "Give me the letter, I will deliver it." The person gave him the letter and the backbiter rushed to the King's agent. The agent read the letter and told the backbiter that the letter ordered him to kill the person that delivered the letter and stuff his body with straw. Now the backbiters eyes were opened. He pleaded with the agent to check with the King but the agent would not listen to him and carried out the orders of the King.

The person that was supposed to take the letter went to the King's court as was his custom and the King was shocked to see him. He asked him about the letter and the person told him what had happened. The King told him what the letter contained and also told him that the same person had told him that he hated the King. That was the reason for the King ordering him to be killed. The king explained that he was told that he did not come close to the king because of his bad breath. The person explained that it was because of the smell of garlic on his breath that he did not come close. The King told him to take his place and that the backbiter had received the punishment for his actions. The King said, "You were right when you said, the one that treats you badly, his evil is enough for him." (Ahya Ul Uloom, Vol 3)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! Have you seen the result of trying to trouble innocent people? Remember that no one can live with peace in the world if they wish ill on anyone else. You will find many incidents like this throughout history. You will never find one that wishes well on others in a troubled state. Allah Ta'ala grants peace and contentment to those that wish good for His bondmen, and seizes those that wish ill on others in such a way that the world says that he got what he deserved.

Therefore we should take a lesson from the story that has just been related and always wish the best for everyone. May Allah Ta'ala guide us all. Aameen

Jealous Of The Pious

One time shaitaan came to Hazrat Nooh alaihis salaam and said, "I want to repay a favour that you did for me." Hazrat Nooh alaihis salaam said, "O rejected one, I never even let you close to me, how could I have done you any favour?"

Shaitaan said, "By asking for your disobedient nation to be drowned, you have saved me from future calamities. You have saved me the trouble of struggling for ways to make them disobedient. In return for that I want to give you some advice, that save yourselves from being jealous of pious people. I was destroyed because I was jealous of Hazrat Adam alaihis salaam, and I became the first one to enter Hell. I could not stand his excellence and his status and refused to bow in front of him and therefore became cursed and rejected." (True Narrative, Nuzhatul Majaalis)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! Sometimes the enemy speaks the truth as well. Shaitaan was jealous of Hazrat Adam alaihis salaam and for this Allah Ta'ala rejected his worship, rejected his praises and rosaries that he had said, did not look at the fact that he had taught the Angels. The result of his jealousy at the status that Allah Ta'ala had given Hazrat Adam alaihis salaam was that he was rejected and cursed forever. This shows us that jealousy is such a great sin that it destroys all the good that a person may have done and makes a person destined for hell. May Allah Ta'ala save us all from jealousy. Aameen.

In Hell One Year Earlier

It is narrated that, "Six people will be put in Hell one year before the accounting begins on the day of judgement. People asked, "Ya Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam, who are these people?" He replied, 1) The rich person who is cruel, 2) The Arab who is prejudice/racist, 3) The landowner who is proud, 4) The businessman whose business practices are not fair, 5) The illiterate because of his ignorance, 6) the scholar because of his jealousy."

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! May Allah Ta'ala protect us all from being amongst the six types of people mentioned above and save us from those bad habits. Aameen.

Jealousy Only Allowed In Two Things

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar radiallaho ta'ala anhuma narrates that Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam said, "Jealousy is only for two kinds of people. The first is that person who has been given wealth by Allah Ta'ala and he spends it all in His path. The second is the person that has been given knowledge, and he acts upon what he knows and teaches the knowledge that he has to other people." (Bukhari and Muslim)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! There is benefit in being jealous of the two types of people mentioned above. However, people are not jealous of such people these days, they think of them as stupid if they do such things. They think of them as backward and not educated or intelligent. If we see someone with wealth that spends in the path of Allah Ta'ala or a scholar that shares his knowledge we should pray that we are blessed with those things so that we can also do those same things. May Allah Ta'ala include us amongst those that are pious. Aameen.

Ways To Be Safe From Jealousy

Hazrat Abu Hurairah radiallaho ta'ala anhu narrates that Rasool Allah sallalaho alaihe wasallam said, "No person is free of three things, 1) Suspicion, 2) Bad Fortune, 3) Jealousy. When you suspect something, do not believe it as true. When someone tells you that you will have bad fortune, stay busy in your work. When you feel jealousy, do not desire it."

Imam Muhammad Ghazali alaihir rehmah says that, "Jealousy is one of the biggest diseases of the heart, and the cure is that a jealous person should realise with a cool head that his jealousy will never destroy the blessings of anyone. There will be no loss to the person that I am jealous about, but my jealousy will ruin my world and my hereafter. I will burn with jealousy inside me and my good deeds will be ruined. My good deeds will go to the person who I am jealous about on the day of judgement. Also he should think that those blessings were given to the person by Allah Ta'ala. By being jealous and burning inside I am showing displeasure at the will of Allah Ta'ala and ruining my faith and my belief. He should think about these things and realise that Allah Ta'ala is The Wise One. He gives to each what they deserve. The person I am jealous about obviously deserves those things in the sight of Allah Ta'ala and that is why he got those things. In this way the disease of jealousy will leave the heart and the jealous person will be saved from the fire of jealousy." (Ahya Ul Uloom, Vol 3)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! May Allah Ta'ala guide us all to act upon the words of Imam Ghazali alaihir rahmah. Aameen.

No Divine Guidance To Recite The Kalima

One of the students of Hazrat Fuzail bin Ayaaz radiallaho ta'ala anhu was close to death. He went to him and sat by his head and began reciting Surah Yasin shareef. The student said, "O my teacher! Do not recite this (It will be of no use to me)." He stayed quiet for a while then urged him once again to recite "Laa Ilala Illal Laah." The student said, "I can not recite that at this time. I am in a bigger predicament than this." He said this and died.

Hazrat Fuzail returned home and cried for forty days at the mistake of his student, and did not leave his home. On the fortieth day he saw in a dream that the student was being dragged towards hell. Hazrat Fuzail said, "O treacherous one, what did you do that made you deserving of Hell, even though you are my student? I did not expect this from you." The young man replied, "I was involved in three things,

" I was a telltale. I would tell my friends one thing, and would tell you something else.
" Jealousy. I was always jealous of those that were better off than I was.
" I had an illness and a doctor told me that to cure it I should drink alcohol once a year. Therefore I used to drink alcohol once every year." (Tafseer Roohul Bayaan, Vol 3)

My Beloved Prophet sallalaho alaihe wasallam's beloved devotees! Hazrat Fuzail bin Ayaaz rehmatullahe ta'ala alaihe was a friend of Allah Ta'ala (Aulia Allah). Even his prompting did not enable this person to recite the Kalima at the time of death and he became one condemned to Hell. He had three faults and the result of those faults was devastating. Allah Ta'ala was so displeased at his backbiting, his jealousy, and at his use of alcohol, that even the prompting of a friend of Allah could not bring the Kalima on his tongue. That is why we should always pray to stay away from sins and always keep account of our deeds and actions. Remember true success is death with faith. May Allah Ta'ala keep us alive on faith and give us death on the religion of Islam. May He save of from the three sins mentioned above and from all sins. Aameen.
